Pony Club Education Day

Held - February 25, 2006

On February 25, 2006, LEVC hosted the local Pony Clubs for a morning of education.  Participants learned to perform proper physical exams from Dr. Trachtenberg and watched as Dr. Pantaleon scoped a horse for gastric ulcers.  We are hopeful that this will be the beginning of a long term partnership as we strive to educate horse people from a very young age.

HOT OFF THE PRESS...

Mobile Computer System
If we have been to your farm recently, you probably have notice our new state of the art computer technology.  We recently have equipped all practice vehicles with laptop computers and printers.  We now have access to your horse's complete medical history and will be able to provide vaccination information as well as print rabies certificates and treatment recommendations.

Acupuncture
This age-old Chinese art can help many common health related issues.  Dr. Trachtenberg has completed a 4 month intensive training course.  We are excited to be able to offer acupuncture to our clients.  Please call our office if you have any questions as to whether or not your horse may benefit from acupuncture therapy.

INFECTIOUS DISEASE UPDATE

POTOMAC HORSE FEVER
Recently, LEVC and a number of other veterinarians have seen an increase of Potomac Horse Fever in the area. While the vaccine is not totally protective, it most likely decreases the severity of the disease. If your horse is not vaccinated, having the initial and the booster will take too much time for it to be effective this year. If you had the PHF vaccine in the spring, a booster is recommended to be given in the next month.

WEST NILE VIRUS
So far this year, no West Nile Virus cases have been seen in horses in the area. LEVC’s current recommendation for the West Nile Virus booster is that any horses that are being heavily campaigned, stressed or are older than twenty, be boosted for WNV. Evidence indicates that once a year vaccination is at least 95% protective and should be sufficient for the rest of the horse population.

TAPEWORMS
Tapeworm infestations have recently been seen as a significant cause of colic. Several new products which contain Praziquantel, an excellent anti-tapeworm medication, are now on the market. Until recently, we have administered double dose Strongid. This has been shown to only be partially effective against tapeworms and we are now recommending you substitute the Praziquantel and administer it twice a year.
